Guidance for schools to support trans young people

Project status Active

The Welsh Government published an LGBTQ+ Action Plan in February 2023, providing a framework for policy development across the Welsh Government and partners to support LGBTQ+ individuals within Wales. As part of the LGBTQ+ Action Plan, the Welsh Government committed to provide appropriate national guidance for schools and local authorities to support trans children and young people in education settings.

The Wales Centre for Public Policy (WCPP) was asked to support the development of this guidance through examining the existing evidence base. We have commissioned the Rapid Research Evaluation and Appraisal Lab (RREAL) at University College London to undertake a rapid evidence review.

The rapid evidence review will use an established, structured, and rigorous search and quality assessment approach to identify, appraise, and synthesise existing published evidence on wellbeing and educational outcomes of different approaches to supporting trans children and young people in education settings, including any available published evidence on outcomes for peers of transgender children and young people. The research will be peer reviewed by subject and methodological experts.

The findings of the rapid evidence review will be used to inform the development of the Welsh Government’s draft guidance to support trans children and young people within education settings ahead of a full public consultation. The review will be published on the WCPP website in autumn 2024.
