Alison is involved in undertaking research which contributes towards building an evidence base for promoting socio-economic equality through policy-making and in organisational practices. Her research interests include:

  • The reproduction of socio-economic inequalities through structures, systems and subjectivities;
  • Gender Pay Gaps and Equal pay;
  • The gendering of labour markets and organisations, in particular in relation to job progression and job design;
  • Gender mainstreaming, within employment, knowledge economies and workplaces and;
  • Intersectional mainstreaming (all dimensions of inequality) within policy making

Alison directed the ‘Women Adding Value to the Economy’ (WAVE) research programme at Cardiff University. WAVE undertook collaborative research with employers to demonstrate how gender pay gaps arise within organisations. Using the evidence base, WAVE supported employers to implement changes to their workforce development and employment structures.

With colleagues, Alison provided the research base for the design of the Welsh public sector equality duty on pay differences.

She is a member of the EHRC (Wales) Committee and has been awarded an OBE for services to equality and diversity.
