How to encourage driver adherence to 20mph consistent with road safety

Project status Active

The Welsh Government is proposing to introduce a default speed limit of 20mph on all residential roads in Wales as part of a suite of measures to promote ‘liveable’ communities. 20mph limits have been implemented in many places in the UK but not on a national scale. A substantial shift in driver behaviour will be needed for the limit to achieve its desired effect.

Speeding is a complex phenomenon shaped by numerous psychological, social, and environmental factors. WCPP has been asked to explore the evidence base underpinning different behavioural approaches to promoting driver compliance.

We have conducted the following:

  • A rapid evidence review that explores the relative effectiveness of different behaviour approaches in securing driver compliance with 20mph speed limits; and
  • An expert roundtable to test the emerging findings and to deepen insights in particular areas.
