Professor Alice Brown

(CBE, FRSE, FAcSS, FRCP Edin, FRSA, Cipfa (Hon))

Alice is Emeritus Professor of Politics at the University of Edinburgh.

She was previously a Vice-Principal, Head of the Department of Politics and Co-Director of the Institute of Governance at Edinburgh and has published widely on economic and labour market policy, equal opportunities, women and politics, Scottish politics, constitutional change and administrative justice.

Alice has held a number of public appointments. She was appointed as the first Scottish Public Services Ombudsman in 2002 and elected as the General Secretary of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2011 (the first woman to hold this post). She became Chair of the Scottish Funding Council in 2013 and has served as a member of the Committee on Standards in Public Life.

Alice holds Honorary Degrees from the University of Strathclyde, Robert Gordon University, University of Aberdeen, Queen’s University Belfast, Glasgow Caledonian University, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier University, and the University of Stirling. She received a Special Recognition Award from the Political Studies Association (2009), The Herald Higher Education Lifetime Achievement Award (2017) and Holyrood Magazine, Lifetime Achievement Public Services Award (2017).
